Need help finding a Free/trusted virus scan

My home computer is sick. Somehow picked up a... virus, I quess. Can't check my e-mails, get popups and yesterday when I closed all my windows My screen went red with the "Hazordous Chemicals" symbol in the middle :sad3:. Now on the top of every web page, it says I might have a serious virus and my Computer could be at risk. I clicked on it once and it opened a antivirus page and wanted me to download a program. Of course I didnt and directly googled the name of this anivirus program (which I don't remember the name). Turns out once youdownload this program, you really get hit with all kinds of viruses and spyware. So thank God I didn't.

I googled " free virus scans" but don't know which ones to trust. The last thing I want to do is download another bogus so-called antivrus and further hurt my computer. Please help. Thanks.

no problem also when you get your computer cleaned up i suggest going to www.avast.com and downloading there free homeversion and then update it and let it run a comlete computer scan gl

Tren micro's is good, AVG is also popular. I've had a virus before and 70% of the scanners didn't find it, sometimes it's a good idea to scan it with a bunch of free scanners. Some of the ones that claim they are free will only scan and not remove the virus, tho lol. AVG also has a free spyware scanner, which you will want to do as well. Spybot and Ad-Aware are 2 other good ones for that.
